Lamu Old Town Heritage Walk

Lamu Island, Kenya

About this experience

Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili towns on the East African coast. Narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, coral-stone houses and donkeys instead of cars give it a character all its own.

A local guide leads you through the seafront, the market, the old fort and quiet residential streets, explaining Swahili architecture, trade history and daily island life.

Highlights

  • Swahili coral-stone architecture
  • Lamu Fort and seafront
  • Local guide from the island community

Good to know

Best for
Culture lovers and slow travellers
When to go
Year-round; the calmer months at sea are usually outside the strongest monsoon winds.
