Mara Serena Safari Lodge sits on the Mara escarpment inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Serena Hotels built it as a hilltop lodge with views toward the Mara River, one of the river corridors used by the wildebeest migration. Game drives from the lodge cover the reserve around the Serena and Mara River areas.

Addo Elephant National Park, near Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), was created to protect the region’s last surviving elephants and now has a large, thriving population. Game drives through dense thicket and open plains offer excellent elephant viewing, plus opportunities to see buffalo, lion and zebra. The park is malaria-free, which makes it a good choice for families, and it links easily with the Garden Route.
After dark, Akagera comes alive with nocturnal animals. A guided night drive, run by the park, uses spotlights to search for leopard, hyena, genet, bush babies and other creatures that are rarely seen by day. The drive usually begins at dusk, so you see the transition from day to night on the savannah.

Arabella Golf Club, near Kleinmond on the Overberg coast, is set along the Bot River lagoon with mountain and water views from many holes. Its closing holes along the lagoon are especially memorable. It pairs well with a stay in Hermanus, the Cape Winelands or a whale-watching trip.

Babylonstoren is a historic Cape Dutch farm best known for its large formal garden, where fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown for its kitchens. Guided garden walks explain how everything is grown and used. A visit usually includes a farm-to-table lunch and a wine tasting, and it pairs well with a day in the Franschhoek or Paarl valleys.
