Kakamega Forest Primate Walk

Kakamega Forest National Reserve, Kenya

About this experience

Kakamega is Kenya’s last significant remnant of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once stretched across central Africa. Guided walks along forest trails offer opportunities to see black-and-white colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, and forest birds found nowhere else in the country.

Early-morning walks are best for birdsong and primate activity. A dawn climb to Lirhanda Hill gives views over the canopy.

Highlights

  • Several monkey species on one walk
  • Rare forest birdlife
  • Optional dawn viewpoint climb

Good to know

Best for
Birders, primate fans and western Kenya routes
When to go
Year-round; the forest is wet in the rains.
Practical note
Trails are muddy after rain. Local guides are required.
