Mount Bisoke Crater Lake Hike

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

About this experience

Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano on the Rwanda–DR Congo border, crowned by a crater lake at around 3,700 metres. The guided hike climbs through bamboo, hagenia forest and giant lobelias to the rim, where, if the mist clears, the lake lies below you.

The climb is steep and often muddy, but it is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Virungas.

Highlights

  • Crater lake near the summit
  • Changing volcanic vegetation
  • Views over the Virungas when clear
