Empakaai Crater Rim Hike

Empakaai Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

About this experience

Empakaai is a smaller, far quieter crater in the Ngorongoro highlands, partly filled by a deep soda lake that often attracts flamingos. An armed ranger guides you down the forested crater wall to the lakeshore, with views of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano on clear days.

The walk is steep and the climb back up is demanding, but you will likely have the crater almost to yourself.

Highlights

  • Descent to a crater lake
  • Ol Doinyo Lengai views on clear days
  • Very few other visitors

Good to know

Best for
Fit walkers and off-the-beaten-track travellers
When to go
Best in the drier months; paths are slippery after rain.
Practical note
